Commitment to a Vision: Introduction
The Music in This Collection
Music is my response to life. It is my spiritual discipline, my prayer, my quest for meaning and my vehicle for sharing what I’ve found. Music is a mystery. I don’t know what power sings through me or reaches for guitar or piano when I’m in despair, frustration, anger or ecstasy. These songs are responses to personal and societal challenges. Many are about self-discovery and recovery: the pain of letting go of the familiar, self-destructive ways of relating; the dance of hope and fear, going into the unknown alone and with one another. They are tender shoots announcing that wholeness is our essence, that we can recover if we reach out to God, to one another, while reaching bravely past the limits of who we thought we were, as we open to our own deeper truths. These songs are theological statements. They are woven with feminist vision of an ever-renewing creation that is always whole yet never static, in which everyone is interconnected, part of everyone and everything in some ineffable way. Many of these songs arose within the context of women’s spirituality circles, as we struggled to give voice to ourselves and each other. All are songs which sang themselves through me and I hope will sing through you.
